Stepping Outside: KQH Counseling Celebrates Community Service

Helping the community with a smile and compassion

At KQH Counseling, we believe that mental health support belongs in every corner of the community. Last week, we took a bold step outside of our office and into the heart of our neighborhood, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished. We celebrated community, hope, and the power of connection by providing mental health resources to nearly 190 people.

This event was not just about giving—it was about empowering. We handed out 40 free journals, carefully designed to help individuals explore their self-worth and healing journey. Alongside these journals, we distributed affirmation cards and stickers—simple reminders that everyone is loved, heard, and deserving of care. We also ensured people could access crisis hotline information—an essential lifeline for those in moments of distress.

As a Black therapist based in Brooklyn, I have seen firsthand how mental health support can transform lives—especially for Black women. So often, stigma and lack of access keep Black women from seeking therapy or delay starting the process, but at KQH Counseling, we aim to break those barriers. Whether it’s through Aetna insurance coverage or sliding scale options, we strive to make therapy for Black women accessible, affirming, and tailored to their experiences.

Our celebration wasn’t just about us—it was about all of us. In a world where mental health is still a rising conversation, stepping outside of the office allowed us to bring critical resources directly to the streets. We saw smiles, heard stories, and most importantly, we planted seeds of hope. Each journal we gave, each hotline card we shared, each affirmation that left someone’s hand—we were making a difference.

  1. Share Mental Health Resources

You never know who may be struggling in silence. Share information about therapy, support groups, crisis hotlines, and wellness resources with friends, family, and neighbors.

  2. Volunteer Your Time

Local shelters, food pantries, schools, and community organizations often need helping hands. Even a few hours of your time can make a meaningful impact.

  3. Support Local Causes and Businesses

Invest in your community by supporting local businesses, attending community events, and donating to organizations that are making a difference.

  4. Practice Kindness and Connection

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can offer is a listening ear. Check in on friends, neighbors, and loved ones. A simple conversation can remind someone they are not alone.

  5. Give What You Can

Whether it's clothing, food, school supplies, journals, books, a simple wish, or financial support, every contribution matters. Small acts of generosity can create lasting change for individuals and families in need.

Final Thoughts

Building a stronger community doesn't always require grand gestures. It starts with small, intentional acts of kindness, compassion, and service. As Aetna therapists, we believe hope grows when people come together to support one another. Whether you're volunteering, sharing resources, or simply checking in on someone who may be struggling, your actions have the power to make a difference. Together, we can create communities where everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and supported.
